Eaten here a couple of times, and it is quite serviceable and tasty, but nothing really special. But if you nearby and want some Indian food, you will be satisfied.

Royal Indian is my favorite Indian restaurant in Charlottesville and I've been to them all. My favorite dishes are the eggplant and okra. The owners are very nice as well and you get 10% discount on takeout orders. The restaurant itself is very nice and I don't know why they don't get more business!

The food is great and is served in a nice atmosphere. I was welcomed in and seated by the owner of the restaurant, Mr. Dahiya who is also the head chef. The service was fast and the food was great. I had the chicken biriyani which was nice and moist here unlike other restaurants. I will be going back. Def A+++

We have eaten at the Royal Indian Restaurant for their lunch buffet several times and have always enjoyed it. The lunch buffet always has several items that you are sure are going to be there (e.g. Tandoori Chicken, great bread, etc) and then has some items that appear to vary from time to time. The staff is very friendly and takes time to answer questions about how the food is prepared and Indian culture. We definitely recommend it.

I've eaten here several times, and it is by far the best Indian restaurant in town! It has a wonderful ambience and gracious staff. I've tried it both for lunch buffet and for dinner, and it is consistently delicious. Now they are also serving a bowl of ice cream after the meal (both lunch and dinner), so we leave with the perfect sweet touch to wrap up the meal.

We come here all the time for take out...you get a 10% discount and they have the best indian food in all of charlottesville. I especially love the chicken madras and the baghan bharta (eggplant). They are far up 29, but I'd definitely encourage more people to check it out!

it is a hit and miss. i previously listed how much i liked royal india because of the food, the owner ,the ambiance but my last experience was very disappointing:I brought in four friends to whom i praised the restaurant. the portion were smaller than usual and the chicken which usually was made with white meat was prepared with dark, overcooked meat which i am sure was left over from the buffet lunch.the vegetables were surprisingly undercooked. I ate there many times,i praised it many times but this is going too far and i felt embarrassed because i had highly recommended this pace to my guests .

Lunch Buffet is good value for your money. Has many options to choose from. Food is tasty.
We were blown away by Chili Paneer when we went there for dinner. It is a little bit on the expensive side but worth it.

Food is incredible- hands down the best indian food in Charlottesille. We've become friendly with the owners, and we no longer order off the menu- they ask what we're in the mood for and surprise us with a feast. Huge vegetarian selection, everything served piping hot and your choice of "hot medium mild" is always correctly executed. Just wonderful.

This place is simply marvelous! They have by far the BEST Indian buffet in town, with a HUGE variety of options (lots for a veggie like me), several desserts, and hot REAL chai tea. It is are truly Indian cuisine, with no beef on the menu and watch out for Indian hot! If their service has ever been slow, the last several visits have proven to me that it was only when they were just getting started. The owner, Ravi, is the nicest person ever (unless you count his wife, then they tie) and is always willing to make special requests or offering free appetizers- yum, go samosas!
Passing by the back end of the restaurant during the summer, I caught a glimpse of the kitchen and have no qualms about eating such a clean environment.
I really can't say enough great things about this place. I have NEVER had a bad experience, or ever less then stellar food.
If you have never had Indian food, try this place. Especially the buffet... yum!

I love Royal Indian Restaurant, it's quite and peaceful. Most importantly the food is very good. The restaurant folks are polite and friendly. My husband and I go there very frequently even when it takes almost 25 minutes to reach there. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone who has taste for authentic Indian food.

I visit Royal at least twice a week. Food is always delicious and tries different things. I love chicken curry, chicken tikka masala n specially ras malai, Indian dessert. The best thing in this restaurant is that they serve Indian tea called chai in buffet, which is very tasty n flavorful. I love the environment its so relaxing that I have not felt in any other Indian restaurant. Owners of the restaurant are very good n friendly, also they themselves take care of customers. I ask them lot about Indian food and culture they are always keen to answer me n sometimes when I ask about food the owner explains me what spices are added that I ordered n he always explains what is good for health. I always prefer Royal Restaurant for Indian food.

Royal is the best restaurant in Charlottesville. Food is delicious, not like other Indian restaurats in Charolletsville. I and my friends found outstanding and high-quality food whether it is buffet or ordered from the menu. The best thing about buffet is that there is lot variety of food and tastes terrific . We go every week and try new things everytime. I love Tandoori dishes and Chicken dishes. Service is good and very friendly atmosphere.

Service was slow- I had to ask three times for a refill on my drink before he brought me a second glass. The food, split between two people, including two appetizers and two entrees was bland at best (decided not to finish one appetizer and one entree as it was less than bland). Didn't see the server after he brought the food until we had to ask for the check 45 minutes later. The first time I have ever tipped less than 15%, hopefully the last.this is one of the most overrated restaurant of the town.anyways i don't want to go back to ROYAL INDIAN RESTAURANT again .

went again to royal India for dinner yesterday, the place was packed for a rainy day and a Sunday. the food as usual was not pretentious but good and flavorful and not drowning in heavy cream like some other Indian restaurants. Service was smooth and attentive in spite of the crowd and the owners were at hand to make sure everybody was taken care of. Service was fast

We had wonderful experience and the best Indian food I ever had. I visit Charlottesville twice a month. I and my friends tried other Indian restaurants in Charlottesville but found Royal the best. Whatever I had there was delicious each time. I always try new dishes especially chicken, lamb, and tried some of the vegetable dishes, its unique and delicious from other Indian restaurants. Lunch buffet has different variety every day and has number of items and is as delicious and fresh as is served on table. After eating in Royal I don’t think of any other restaurant in Charlottesville. The atmosphere is friendly and excellent service. One of the hostesses is always in her traditional dress, always smiling, and my wife loves her traditional Indian dress.

Royal Indian restaurant is my best restaurant in Charlottesville. Everything is so delicious, especially chicken, seafood, and my friends liked kofta and Mix Vegetable. Service is wonderful, Very friendly atmosphere, Great food. I have visited with friends and family 9 times, 4 times in lunch; they have lot variety in lunch buffet (fruits, vegetable salads, soups, appetizers, rice, yellow rice with nuts, vegetable dishes, chicken dishes, lamb and goat dishes, chai tea, dessert) and all are as delicious as when ordered and everything is so fresh. When I am in C’ville I do not miss going to Royal.

We went there three times, once for dinner, twice for buffet. I like the fact that they homemake everything. Owner is nice, lunch buffet is very low price and tasty. Has some choices of very special food. The milk tea is very good as well.

Dinner we had curry lamb and something else, they are both very good. Home made icecream is not smooth enough, but has distinctive texture, worth a trial.

My dad love their rice very much.

Royal Indian Restaurant is the best place in the town for Indian food, especially if you want to taste the authentic Indian food. I was pleasantly surprised with the taste of the food as having several Indian restaurants in various cities in US, I had given up on my expectation of getting good Indian food. The food here reminded me of my favorite Indian restaurant back home... Awesome food, great ambience, and a very friendly set of people.. The place boasted of a very neat and clean restroom.. Overall, great dining experience.

I am well informed about Indian cuisine and i do believe that royal india has very good Indian food without any food gimmicks. The closest in Charlottesville to authentic cuisine from India. it reminded me of the restaurant from New York city. I did not mind the trip from Downtown Charlottesville The service is discreet and the owners do care about what they do. the vegetable curry was perfect just like the butter chicken. the apetizers were very well presented and FRESH'. the soup was delicious too.

Ps: i happen to patronize other Indian establishments in Town and this restaurant can claim a strong lead compared to the others.
keep up the good work.
It is of the same caliber as my other favorite restautrant

all i gotta say is OMG, Royal Indian Restaurant truly has the best food. My son just came back from IRAQ last week. We went to eat there for dinner and absolutely loved the food. Royal has created the most peaceful dinner environment. On a raised platform is a wall-attached fountain and has 2 V.I.P tables right next to it. While we were enjoying our meal, water was softly pouring down from the fountain and the peaceful music was playing over the Royal's surround-sound-system. It was just the perfect peaceful environment my son was looking for after his long days of fighting in IRAQ.

What else can you compare it to??? This place is a joke. Food is cold and the pre-prepared food is left uncovered in the walk in freezer in the back. Save yourself. Eat at Home.

Very good Indian restaurant, and conveniently located for those who live up US-29N, north of town. The buffet is very good and nicely seasoned -- but if you're looking for very hot (i.e. spicy) Indian food, you'll likely be disappointed. For dinner, the quality of the chicken dishes is especially good (including the chicken tikka, vindaloo, korma, mango, and masala). The aloo tikki appetizer is great, as are the tomato soup and spinach & chicken soup. Best kheer in Charlottesville, hands-down (whether buffet or sit-down -- both are equally excellent). Wonderfully friendly owner and wait staff. Nice atmosphere.

Nice environment, great food, good services. I like the lamb curry with rice a lot, by far the best curry in town. The seafood mango curry is ok, but I could not find any taste of mango. Definitely try the Nann and appretizers. Everything is homemade. Well, the home made ice cream has odd texture though...

Service is kind of slow, but polite. The owner is very friendly and we could feel that he's been very proud for their food. will go back to try the lunch buffet

Excellent service, clean silverware, functional ambiance. The choices are varied, tasty, and lightly-- more importantly, correctly-- spiced. The tandoori chicken, however, is a major exception. It was somewhat rubbery on both times I visited. Since tandoori chicken is a signature dish, it's not a small blunder. Still, given the overly spiced messes that passes for Indian food, this restaurant's sensible, light touch is a welcome relief.
